What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy can be used to improve the appearance of many superficial veins, including spider veins, and is a common vascular treatment option. This vascular treatment uses a fine needle to inject a medicated solution, typically a saline solution, directly into the vein to irritate the lining and cause it to collapse. Over time the vein will gradually fade and be reabsorbed by the body. Multiple veins can be treated during one treatment and spider veins on most areas of the body can be effectively treated with sclerotherapy.
How long will the procedure take?
Treatment sessions generally last between 30 minutes to one hour. The length of the procedure can vary from patient to patient depending on the area being treated and how many veins are being treated during the procedure.
What is the recovery period like?
We recommend patient wear compression stockings or bandages for at least two weeks after a sclerotherapy procedure to encourage the treated area to heal properly. Most patients are able to resume their normal activities immediately following this procedure. Walking and regular movement are an important part of the recovery period because it encourages circulation and prevents blood clots from forming. We recommend patients avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for at least two weeks after a sclerotherapy treatment.
What are the potential side effects?
You may experience some mild bruising, stinging, or discomfort at the injection site immediately following a procedure. It is also common for patients to experience some mild swelling of the feet or ankles following a sclerotherapy treatment session. These side effects are temporary and typically subside within a few weeks of treatment.
