What is a phlebectomy?
A phlebectomy is a minimally invasive vascular treatment is used to remove small portions of bulging, superficial veins, like varicose veins, through tiny incisions in the skin. This procedure is often performed in combination with sclerotherapy or EVLT treatments for optimal results.
What can I expect during a procedure?
Prior to the procedure, Dr. Steljes will mark the veins for treatment and cleanse and numb the designated treatment area. Small punctures will be made in the skin and the targeted portion of the vein will be removed through these incisions. This procedure is performed under local anesthetic and typically lasts between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the area being treated.
What can I expect during the recovery period?
You may experience some mild bruising, swelling, or numbness in the treated area immediately following the procedure. These are temporary side effects and typically subside within a week of the procedure. We encourage our patients to resume light activity immediately following the procedure to stimulate circulation and encourage optimal healing, though we do recommend patients avoid strenuous exercise and lifting for at least three days following a treatment. Some patients may be asked to wear compression stockings in order to aid the healing process.
Am I a candidate?
We typically recommend phlebectomy treatments to patients with bulging varicose veins on their legs. During your consultation, Dr. Steljes will review your case and determine if a phlebectomy is the right procedure for you.
