At Servicios Quirurgicos del Caribe, our talented staff are fully trained in sclerotherapy, a permanent answer to ridding yourself of spidery veins for good.
Does it sound too good to be true? Don’t worry – it isn’t. Sclerotherapy is a tried and true method used by many cosmetic clinics around the world. For your convenience, we’ve gathered up the most frequently asked questions patients have about this treatment. Consider this your crash course in everything you need to know about sclerotherapy.
Why Should You Consider Sclerotherapy?
First and foremost, it isn’t a crime to want to feel pretty. Wanting to look a certain way is human, and a perfectly acceptable reason to seek out this treatment. It can be a source of self-consciousness to know that your legs aren’t as smooth, supple, and evenly toned as you want them to be. Even having a bruise on your leg can be reason enough to cover up. Is it any wonder that women afflicted with spider veins or varicose veins feel the same way?
There are countless other solutions that people try. Some women resort to using nude tights or pantyhose to perfect the appearance of their legs, but that can become a hassle in the warmer months or if the hose start a run. Others use self-tanning lotions or tinted creams that temporarily cover up imperfections, but these products can be messy and wash off easily. And while you might be able to wear jeans and yoga pants most of the time, there will be occasions where you need to dress a certain way.
The solution that saves the most time and effort is one that is permanent, and that is sclerotherapy. If you’re looking for a hassle-free, no-need-to-think-twice-about-it solution to perfecting the appearance of your legs, then this is the remedy you need to consider.
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted, and gnarled veins found primarily in the legs and feet. Varicose veins are obvious from appearance, as they tend to be dark and protrude slightly from the skin. Overall, varicose veins are an unsightly, but superficial concern. There are no obvious risks associated with having varicose veins, although the presence of varicose veins is an indicator of aging.
What Causes Varicose Veins?
What causes these large, dark, twisting veins to appear in legs and feet? Research shows that varicose veins appear in veins where vein walls are weak or damaged. Varicose veins might also be caused by exceptionally high blood pressure. Varicose veins are benign, but if you find that your legs ache, then varicose veins might be an indicator of an underlying vascular or circulatory issue.
Varicose veins are also thought to be caused by genetics, pregnancy, obesity, repetitive strenuous activity, and aging. Overall, having varicose veins is not usually considered a serious medical condition, which is why cosmetic treatments are used to diminish the appearance of the veins.
What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are another vein-related affliction that is largely superficial. Spider veins are typically small clusters of dark veins sitting right beneath the surface of the skin and can be found in the legs, feet, and even face. Spider veins are blue, purple, and red and are typically between the size of a quarter and a silver dollar. They are called spider veins because the thin veins appear to look like spider webs or even tree branches.
What Causes Spider Veins?
Similarly to varicose veins, spider veins are also not associated with any major health concerns. The cause of spider veins is generally unknown, although research shows that weak vein walls might be a contributing factor. Other factors that might cause spider veins include pregnancy, sun exposure, rosacea, and aging. Because spider veins are not a serious medical issue, they can easily be treated with cosmetic interventions.
Can You Have Varicose Veins and Spider Veins At the Same Time?
If you read over the descriptions of these vein afflictions and found that you have veins in your legs that match both descriptions, then it is likely that you have both varicose and spider veins. Having both varicose and spider veins is common.
The causes of varicose and spider veins are closely related. Many people who have varicose veins also notice spider veins on their legs as well. In fact, varicose veins and spider veins are considered comorbid, or two medical conditions that occur at the same time.
Even if you have both varicose veins and spider veins at the same time, it is still possible to have them treated with sclerotherapy.
What Is Sclerotherapy?
This treatment is a common vascular therapy that is used to diminish, reduce, or altogether disappear the presence of varicose veins and spider veins. This is a minimally invasive treatment that involves a small needle and the injection of a medicinal solution that works to collapse enlarged veins. This therapy is considered a permanent solution for varicose veins and spider veins. Usually only one treatment is necessary to be effective.
Who Are Ideal Candidates?
Ideal candidates for this treatment include anyone who is troubled by the appearance of the veins in their legs, feet, or face. There is no age limitation or medical restrictions for this treatment. No matter how minor or severe the appearance of your veins, this treatment is an effective remedy. Multiple veins can be treated with this therapy during a single appointment.
The Treatment Process
What is the exact treatment process for this therapy? After your consultation appointment, where our expert staff will examine your veins and discuss the treatment plan, you can expect to come in for a second appointment.
Step One: Preparation
You will be asked to refrain from taking certain supplements and non-inflammatory medications unless otherwise directed by a doctor, for one full week before your treatment. On the day of the appointment, you should bring shorts to wear during the treatment and comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for going home. Please do not apply lotion to the area that is to be treated. We might give you additional guidelines to follow prior to your second appointment.
Step Two: Cleanse
Before the treatment, our staff will make sure you are comfortable in the treatment room and thoroughly cleanse the area that is to be treated. Cleaning the skin around the veins ensures a safe and clean treatment.
Step Three: Injection
This treatment is performed only by certified doctors. The injection is made with a fine, thin needle and a solution made in part with a saline solution. Depending on the size and location of the veins being treated, multiple injections may need to be made to fully collapse the veins. It may also be necessary to come back for additional appointments to collapse severely enlarged varicose veins.
After the injections have been made, your treatment is officially over. We will assist you in placing compression hosiery on for the immediate recovery and then you will be allowed home to resume regular activities.
How Long Does the Treatment Take?
Usually, this treatment lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour. The length of the treatment depends on your specific case, although the majority of patients are finished within the time frame. It is possible that you might have to return for a second treatment appointment. Most patients require only one treatment appointment.
What Is Recovery Like?
Recovery for this treatment is simple. We have two main guidelines for you to follow after the treatment. Overall, there are very few restrictions after this treatment, and the guidelines are meant to be followed so that you get the best results possible.
For 2 days following the treatment, we may ask you to avoid taking certain anti-inflammatory medications unless otherwise indicated by a doctor. You are strongly encouraged to continually wear compression hosiery during this time. You should wash the injected areas with mild soap and warm water. You should also avoid saunas, whirlpool tubs, hot tubs, and heating pads.
For two weeks following the treatment, you are still encouraged to wear compression leggings or hosiery. During this time, we encourage patients to walk and resume light regular activity. Movement is important to the recovery process as it encourages healthy circulation. It is best to avoid strenuous activity during this time, such as lifting heavy weights or other intense activities.
How Long Should I Stay Out of the Sun After Sclerotherapy?
One of the most important guidelines you need to follow during the recovery period is avoiding sun exposure. This is most important during the first 48 hours following the treatment. Please avoid direct contact with sunlight and tanning beds for two days following the treatment. After that, continue to limit your sun exposure for a few weeks and wear sunscreen when you do go out.
How Long Does the Treatment Last?
This treatment is considered permanent. As a one-time solution, this treatment will permanently collapse enlarged veins and help them be reabsorbed into the body over a period of time. For varicose veins, results of this treatment are usually seen within 3 months, while spider veins can disappear within weeks following treatment. Once a vein has been treated with this therapy, the enlarged appearance will not return.
However, it is possible that other varicose veins or spider veins will form over time in other areas of the legs or feet. This therapy treats the symptoms of varicose and spider veins but not the underlying causes. If new varicose veins or spider veins appear, then you will need another round of treatment to address the new vein malformations. The appearance of new varicose or spider veins is not a side effect of this treatment.
While this treatment is classed as a cosmetic intervention, there are plenty of other uses for this therapy. This treatment is a common solution to treat enlarged veins, so it is most often seen in dermatology or cosmetic surgery clinics such as our own. However, other uses for this therapy include treating children and young adults with malformed blood vessels or lymphatic issues. If your interest in this therapy is medical rather than cosmetic, our staff will discuss additional information with you at your consultation.
